The basic parts of the plans to build a brick oven are:

1.The floor –Some plans to build a brick oven recommend placing a foundation layer made of concrete slab, scrap concrete or sand on the ground where the oven is to be built. Following this base, an intermediary, non-optional layer made of concrete blocks or cinder blocks about 3 stacks high is fitted on. The blocks need not be cemented together but you have to make sure that they fit snugly into each other and fill the entire area of the floor. A grinder may have to be used to ensure the blocks form a flat surface. If the blocks are cemented together, you can go ahead to create the hearth by laying 2 thick layers of concrete on the blocks. This is the hot plate of your oven. Some plans to build a brick oven recommend creating the hearth separately, as a third layer, on a plywood frame in which thick wires may be crisscrossed to hold the hearth together firmly.

2.The walls and roof– Having assembled your floor, the next step in plans to build a brick oven will be to create the wall of the oven. This can be done in two ways. One is to make the wall continuous with the dome roof. To do this you will need enough sand on your floor, molded in the shape of a dome, to fill the area which will be the inside of your oven. Plans to build a brick oven advice that you cover the mold with newspaper to distinguish it from the clay walls and roof. Carefully and gradually slap on the first layer of the clay walls and roof over the sand. Let this settle for about one day and place another layer as insulation over it. Optionally you can pat in place some clay around the sides to make the wall vertically straight.

The longer way to create the walls and roof in plans to build a brick oven is to lay out the walls first with bricks around the floor of the oven. You can make the wall slightly higher than the floor. Cement the wall in place. To create the dome out of bricks in plans to build a brick oven, do it one row of bricks at a time. Construct one row of bricks with concrete on an arched template. Then, row by row, move from the back of the oven till you reach the front.

3.The doorway and chimney – The doorway of plans to build a brick oven needs to be cut into the clay dome. A safe estimate of where to place the opening will be a little less than 2/3 of the way to the top of the dome, measured from the base of the dome, on the side where you want to doorway to be. A chimney on the oven will mean less heat. The trade off is that smoke won’t be blowing into your face. In plans to build a brick oven A chimney may be inserted through a hole in the dome and needs to be fixed in place with fire clay.
