Almost everyone has an oven in their home. Ovens are the enclosed compartment of a stove that heat to a constant temperature and heat evenly on all sides. Ovens are electric or gas powered. Ovens are used for cooking, baking or drying. An oven used to dry pottery is a kiln and it isn’t recommended to cook steak in that kind of oven.
The most important thing to note when cooking steak in an oven is to be sure to preheat the oven to 450 degrees prior to cooking the steak. Remove the steak from the refrigerator approximately 30 minutes before cooking, allowing the meat to reach room temperature. Keep the steak covered with plastic wrap until time to cook.
To enhance the flavor of the steak cooked in an oven, without compromising the flavor of the steak itself, poke some holes in the steak with a fork and then coat the meat with olive oil. Rub a mixture of salt and black pepper into the steak right before cooking. The holes will allow the marinade to seep into the steak for a throughout the steak flavor. Or if a greater flavor is desired, marinate your steak in a covered container in the refrigerator overnight. Ingredients may include a combination of oil and dry ingredients, such as olive oil or Italian salad dressing, garlic, crushed black pepper, salt, oregano, parsley, sage rosemary or thyme or whatever your favorite spices may be. Of course it is okay to cook a steak in the oven without any dry rub or marinade.
A thick steak that weighs between 12 and 16 ounces and is 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 inches thick are best for oven cooking. Thin steaks tend to cook to fast and it is easy to overcook your steak.
Pan sear the steak in a fry pan over a medium heat until the steak begins to get brown in color. This should take about 3 to 4 minutes per side.
Transfer the steak into a baking pan coated with a small amount of olive oil and put in the oven that has been preheated to 325 degrees for about 25 to 30 minutes. You can cook your steak at 450 degrees for about 10 to 12 minutes but the outside will cook to quick, leaving the insides a little on the raw side. To check when your steak is done use a thermometer to check the interior temperature. For a medium steak the temperature will be about140 to 145 degrees, for medium well steak the temperature will be about 150 to 155 degrees and for well done steak the temperature will be about 160 degrees. While cooking, do not cut the meat to check the interior color. That just lets some of the juice escape and may cause the meat to dry out. Turn the steak once during cooking. This will help prevent uneven cooking. When your steak is done to the desired temperature, remove it from the heat and let it rest for a few minutes. Add a dab of your favorite steak sauce and enjoy.
