Everyone has an Easy Bake Oven or at least had one at one time or another. If you say you didn’t, I’ll find it hard to believe. Kids are very familiar with this type of oven because they are the ovens that taught them how to bake their first cake or at least what passed for a cake and had to be consoled by mom and told it would definitely come out better the next time.

In case you really didn’t know, the Easy Bake Oven is a miniature version of the real one given to girls to learn how to bake or make a mess in the kitchen. How grown up I felt when I was given my “Pink” oven. I used to get pretty rattled because my mom never let me use it on my own. While I can understand why now, I always used to think my mom bought it so that she could play with it herself. In fact, I still think that’s reason although of course she could not admit to wanting a Barbie oven in pink, now could she?

Although these toy ovens built by Hasbro came into the market around the 60’s they were clearly not child safe. With a front opening door that could shut and trap a little girl’s fingers causing burns, many parents were doubtful about the safety factor of the Easy Bake oven. With complaints beginning to rise, the Manufacturer had to recall the ovens and the original model disappeared from the scene in the 1970’s.

However, there have been many versions of the Easy Bake Oven down the ages and here’s a list of some of them:

?1963 – A working toy, this Easy Bake oven came in turquoise with a handle and fake top. It was invented by Kenner products and became a household name
?1968 - A miniature Betty Crocker version of the Easy Bake created by General Mills.
?1969 - An avocado green Easy Bake by Hasbro which came with a hood, more dials and a fake clock.
?1970 – This bigger version of the Easy Bake in harvest gold, could bake large cakes and came with a 20 minute timer as well.
?1978 – Came out in a techno color version of orange, white and brown resembling a micro wave oven.
?1980 - The latest Easy Bake in white, the new fashion color with dual controls for high and low temperatures.
?1997 - Easy Bake expands into various little toys such as the “Cr?me Pups Bake set”, “All my Love Chocolates kit”, M&M’s, dunkin’Donuts and gaining in popularity.
?2003 – Easy Bake becomes the real thing and allow kids to make Pizza, French fries, macaroni & cheese while taking on a brand new look.
?2007 - Goes back to the original style of the Easy Bake Oven snack Center.

Simple, lots of fun and a breeze to use, kids feel happy when they can accomplish something that they feel only adults can do. The Easy Bake oven is a good toy, which is not exactly a toy but is sure to keep the children occupied for hours, but mums should always keep an eye on them.
