BBQ Ribs Done in the Oven

Delicious, mouth is watering and finger licking good. Barbecued ribs are all that and more. The best ribs ever; we used to be told were those that were barbecued. This however, does not happen to be correct. When you barbecue the ribs straight away, the cooking time is not enough and the meat tends to be tough and leathery. Why most people prefer to BBQ ribs is because they want that authentic smoky flavor. I personally think it’s better to have tender and juicy well flavored ribs without the smoke rather than have smoky, but tough and difficult to chew ribs.

It is however possible to cook ribs in the oven and the secret to it is in the low temperature and slow cooking for a longer time. Although professional chefs sometimes take as long as 6 hours to cook ribs, there’s a way you can cook delicious ribs in around 3-4 hours. While some people are of the opinion that ribs should first be boiled or steamed. There are others who say that this method is completely wrong. According to their thinking, by boiling the ribs the water gets into the meat and kills the flavor. Well then, you might as well ask; what is the best way to cook ribs in the oven.

Here’s one way of doing it:

Marinate the ribs overnight in your favorite combination of spices (salt and pepper is good enough) and refrigerate after wrapping the ribs in plastic. The next day, just one hour before you start cooking, you can take the ribs out of the fridge.

Having preheated the oven to 275 degrees, a pan of hot water should be placed on the lowest rack of the oven. Put the ribs on a rack and place it directly over the pan of water. (This helps to catch the dripping fat). After about 1 ? hours, rub the ribs with a mixture of apple juice and oil 1:3 parts, and repeat the basting every half an hour until the ribs are done. You’ll know its done when a tooth pick goes through the meat. Leave the ribs to rest for about 20 minutes and just before serving; apply your favorite BBQ sauce in order to keep the sugar from turning black.

You can see from the above procedure that it takes only about 3 to 3 ? hours for the complete meal to be cooked in the oven. If you want to make your ribs even tastier, lower the heat and cook for a longer time to see the meat coming off the bone. It might take a little while to get it just right. But through experience, you can make the most awesome tasting BBQ ribs in the oven that will put even a professional chef to shame.
